From presentation slide decks to e-books and spreadsheets, sharing a PDF is one way to ensure that the person you send it to can almost certainly read it.

Different operating systems widely support PDF files, including tablets and mobile phones.

Users can open a PDF within CorelDRAW in seconds, ensuring that all the original formatting will be displayed correctly.

What is the purpose of a PDF file?

PDF was originally designed as the be-all, end-all file format that finally replaces paper printouts for every possible use case.

PDF can store any data from any application on any device.

Compared to similar formats like .docx files and spreadsheets, you don’t need a specific kind of software or device to access a PDF file.

What are the limitations of PDF files?

One major limitation of PDF files is that they aren’t easy to edit. This is both a disadvantage in that it is difficult to make edits to a file, but an advantage if you have a certain file that you don’t want edits made to and want to keep intact.

Are there different types of PDF files?

  • PDF/E: The “E” refers to Engineering and contains additional features that architects, construction managers, and other types of professionals need including larger format drawings, multimedia, 2D rendering, and 3D models.
  • PDF/X: The “X” refers to Printing and contains additional features such as improved fonts, color profiles, and higher-quality images. This file type is perfect for printers and graphic designers.
  • PDF/VT: The “VT” stands for Variable and Transactional Printing and is the newer file format of the PDF/X. It contains additional customization features and allows users to print multiple copies of the same file while automatically making small changes to personalize each print. An example of this would be printing letters or other invitations while automatically changing out the addressee’s name, mailing address, etc.
